  • Mr Dursley was the director(이사) of a firm(회사) called Grunnuings, which made drills.
  • He was a big, beefy(살이 찐) man with hardly any neck, although he did have a very large moustache(콧수염).
  • Mrs Dursley was thin and blonde(금발) and had nearly twice the usual(보통의) amount of neck, which came in very useful as she spent so much of her time craning over(기어다니다) garden fences, spying on the neighbours.
  • The Dursleys had s small son called Dudley and in their opinion there was no finer(훌륭한) boy anywhere.
  • They didn't think they could bear(견디다 = handle) it if anyone found out about the Potters.
  • in fact, Mrs Dursley pretended(~인 척하다) she didn't have a sister, because her sister and her good-for-nothing(쓸모없는) husband were as unDursleyish as it was possible to be.
  • The Dursleys shuddered(몸서리치다) to think what the neighbours would say if the Potters arrived in the street.
  • When Mr and Mrs Dursley woke up on the dull(칙칙한), grey Tuesday our story starts, there was nothing about the cloudy sky outside to suggest that strange and mysterious things would soon be happening all over the country.
  • Mr Dursley hummed(흥얼거리다) as he picked out his most boring tie for work and Mrs Dursley gossiped away(잡담을 하다) happily as she wrestled a screaming Dudley into his high chair.
  • None of them noticed(알아채다) a large tawny(황갈색) owl flutter past the window.
  • At half past eight, Mr Dursley picked up his briefcase(서류 가방), pecked Mrs Dursley on the cheek and tried to kiss Dudley goodbye but missed, because Dudley was now having a tantrum(버럭) and throwing his cereal at the walls.
  • `Little tyke(사랑스러운 아이)`, chortled(속삭이다) Mr Dursley as he left the house.
  • It was on the corner of the street that he noticed the first sign of something peculiar(이상한) - a cat reading a map.
